There’s a New Brand in Town – Welcome to A Familiar Stranger

Brand values

It’s all about the brand nowadays isn’t it? Well, at least that’s what we’re told.

To be honest I can be pretty cynical about all that, especially when it ends up in talking about people as if they are products – mere commodities to be bought and sold.

And I get it if you think that re-branding is just another way of saying,

‘spending a load of money coming up with a new name that makes no sense, doesn’t tell you anything about what the business / company / product is actually about, and is accompanied by a new logo that apparently represents brand values, deeply held principles, our promise to you as a valued customer, blah blah blah, and looks a load of rubbish.’

All that said, I’ve re-branded. Please bear with me while I explain.

Introducing: A Familiar Stranger

So who’s this familiar stranger then?

Well, that would be me, Matthew. Let me explain.

We all have a story to tell. Our stories connect us to others, enabling us to recognise our shared humanity in our shared struggles and triumphs.

We are a social species and we need such connections; we need to feel that we belong somewhere. And when life is dark we need to know that we aren’t alone; that someone, somewhere, gets it. That somebody just like us has been there, and has come out the other side.

I share my story to be that familiar stranger to others.

There’s another reason too.

In my struggles with my mental health there have been many times when I have felt like a familiar stranger to myself. In writing the posts and poems that you will find here, I have come to better know and understand the familiar stranger that I see in the mirror.

And there you have it, my new brand. Despite the change of name, I will continue to write with plenty of love, laughter and truth. I hope you enjoy it.
